Future Readers, I like odd instruments and I like looking for information about 'odd' instruments. As a lazy guy, I can't test out every odd instrument that I find, but I do find alternatives. I've been trying to play the Saw since May, with no success. The saw? you might ask. Yes, the saw, as in that thing on the title image. The one in the image is a proper "Musical Saw" named Baritone for it's pitch range MY saw on the other hand is a normal steel saw which plays the same... it's a saw after all, mine's just a bit more useful in case I need to cut something.
Violin Bow
To play the saw you need a "Bow" and it plays very similarly to the violin. The sound is very distinct and it's not really for everyone; but if you can find the beauty in making music with something designed to cut you'll end up spending more time looking for information about this unusual instrument.
These can be bought at specific stores, like this one. But all in all it's more fun to buy a normal saw and do the dulling of the tips yourself.
As for the sound of these... well; check this out.
This is a very modern use of the musical saw, that's why I posted this instead of a more "oldie" video. But you can find more awesome saw players on youtube or the net without any problem if you search for "The musical saw".
Hi. I’m a social researcher, developer and consultant. Bringing you news that would probably make your head hurt and some others that will make you want to hug a puppy.
There is an annual Musical Saw Festival in New York City every summer. They have a workshop for people who want to learn to play. Info is on their website, and lots of great videos from the festival: www.MusicalSawFestival.org
O.o that's news to me XD i'll check that out; I've read a lot about people in the big apple playing the saw on the streets I guess there's a pretty big saw player community over there.
