This week Luis Arenas Perez passed away. Luis was the creator of the BK's Whopper Jr. Ex-president of the Caribbean Restaurants, the company that pioneered puertorican Burger Kings. He opened the first BK on the island back in 1963 when he moved from Miami to dedicate his time on the growth of the chain in PR.
On the opening day of the first BK on the island, located in Carolina PR they didn't have the correct pan sizes to bake the buns for the traditional Whopper so he decided to use normal sized buns to sell the whoppers. He called them Whopper Jr's.
Since their debut back in 1963 the whopper jr that was born on the island has become a globally known part of the Burger King's menu.
Aside from the burger, this man was responsible of a great donation from BK when hurricane Hugo hit the island; he gave $500,000 to the red cross and a similar amount to be divided for all of the affected BK employees.
We've probably all eaten a piece of this man's creation, which just appeared out of necessity and has fed a lot of lower income families when all they knew was rice and beans.
The cause of his death was reported to be a lung complication.
Best wishes to his family.
